Program Dates for 2006: June 19 to August 2

Description of Program

The University of Georgia offers a 6-week study abroad program in the city of Erlangen in northern Bavaria. A vibrant city of 100,000, Erlangen is conveniently located just north of Nuremberg in the magnificent region of Franconia. Students in the program will greatly enhance their German language skills through classroom instruction and interaction with the local culture. The program begins with a five-day travel tour from the Rhine valley to the Austrian Alps. There are also two overnight weekend trips to Leipzig/Weimar and Prague. Wednesday excursions will take you to important and picturesque cities such as Nürnberg and Bamberg. This unique mixture of academic and cultural studies enables program participants to experience German culture and life firsthand.

The host institution, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, provides classroom space and student resources. The German courses are taught by the program director, experienced teachers from UGA, and local instructors.

Participants earn six semester credit hours for two 3-hour courses in German language and culture. Language courses, from the second to the fourth year, and courses in German culture are offered. All academic credits will be granted by the University of Georgia.

The program is open to undergraduate students who, by time of departure, will have completed at least two semesters of German (or the equivalent) at the college level and are in good academic standing. All candidates have to have an interview with the program director before being admitted into the program.

Participants stay with guest families in Erlangen. On overnight trips, students stay in two- and three-bed hotel rooms, or youth hostels.

The program begins on June 19, 2006 in Frankfurt (departure date from the US is June 18 if you fly w/ the group ticket), and ends on August 2, 2006 in Frankfurt. We start off with a five-day travel tour and will then spend five weeks in Erlangen, with weekend travels to Leipzig/Weimar and Prague.

The program cost is $ 2,790.00. This includes travel and excursions, some meals during the 5-day travel tour, home stay in Erlangen w/breakfast, ground transportation in Erlangen (bike or bus pass), some books for GRMN 3550, insurance, and an international student ID card. Tuition is in addition to that amount and paid separately directly to the Bursar’s Office. For two courses, tuition is about $ 1,000.00, plus the technology fee. If you are on HOPE, this scholarship will cover your tuition and technology fee. If you are not on HOPE, add the tuition to your program cost.
Your program cost does not include airfare, optional (overnight?) trip to Munich, lunch and dinner in Erlangen, some meals in Leipzig/Weimar and Prague, course materials, and personal expenses.
.

All UGA students are strongly encouraged to apply for a Kicklighter travel grant for financial support.
